Dog Trainer Language

The language of a Dog Trainer

Megan Brooks CDT, CGC Evaluator

Dogs learn by association and repetition.  You have less than 2 seconds to associate a response, whether it be positive or negative, with your dog's behavior.

Tone of voice- We must establish 3 tones of voice; praise, command and correction

Basic training philosophy- Reward behaviors you want to be repeated and ignore or associate a negative response with behaviors you want to be extinguished

Reinforcement- Anything likely to increase the occurrence of a given behavior

Punishment- Anything likely to decrease the occurrence of a given behavior

Positive reinforcement- Delivery of a desirable event contingent on a behavior with the goal of increasing the likelihood of the behavior in the future.  For example, your dog sits and is given a food reward

Positive punishment- Delivery of an unpleasant event contingent on a behavior with the goal of decreasing the likelihood of the behavior in the future.  For example, your dog breaks his “Down-stay” and is given a verbal correction

Negative reinforcement- Removal of an unpleasant event contingent on a behavior with the goal of increasing the likelihood of the behavior in the future.  For example, a technique for teaching retrieving involves what is known as the “ear pinch” the pinch is relieved as soon as the dog takes the dumbbell in his mouth

Negative punishment- Removal of a pleasant event contingent on a behavior with the goal of decreasing the likelihood of the behavior in the future.  For example, puppies learn what is called “Bite inhibition” during play when we yelp and discontinue playing when he is too rough
